A TEENAGER has been charged with the murder of a football fan who died after a town centre clash between supporters.

Andrew McNee, 18, of Osborne Way, Haslingden, is accused of killing Nottingham Forest fan Nathan Shaw before the Division One game in Burnley on Saturday.

He was due to appear before Burnley magistrates today.

Nathan, 17, from Nottingham, was hit on the head by a bottle after trouble broke out between two groups of supporters in St James Street, Burnley.

The teenager was taken to Burnley General Hospital but later transferred to the head injuries unit at Preston Royal Infirmary, where he died on Sunday.

His family are believed to have travelled from Nottingham to be by his bedside.

A post mortem examination carried out by a Home Office pathologist gave the cause of Mr Shaw's death as a "blunt force head injury".

Well-wishers have left scores of messages and floral tributes at the scene since the incident.

Officers made detailed forensic searches of the spot where Mr Shaw was injured, near Yates's Wine Lodge, and also studied footage from CCTV cameras close to the scene.

McNee was arrested at his home by police officers early on Monday and was taken to Burnley police station.

He was charged with murder last night.

A police spokesman said: "Following his arrest and questioning, Andrew McNee has been charged with the murder of Nathan Shaw and will now appear before magistrates."

Following the incident, Burnley Football Club issued a statement offering its condolences to Nathan's family and manager Stan Ternent urged fans to help police with their inquiries.
