A BOOST of £30million for transport has been handed to Lancashire, the Government announced yesterday.

Lancashire County Council will receive £25.4million while Blackburn with Darwen Council will get around £5.4million.

The money will help fund the two authorities' local transport plans, which set out how public transport is to be improved along with road systems in the area.

Blackburn with Darwen Council is expected to use the money to help fund a new bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Eanam to help reduce traffic congestion on Accrington Road.

Other major projects in the town include the completion of Barbara Castle Way so it links up with Montague Street. A major restructuring of the Waterfall Bridge in Mill Hill is also being carried out to reduce the chance of flooding.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said their money would be used on a variety of projects, including the expansion of quality bus routes and cycling facilities.

Hyndburn already has a quality bus route, a concept which involves new buses, better bus shelters and better access for disabled people and pram-pushing mothers.

Transport secretary Alistair Darling said: "Today's package of measures signal real benefits for communities across England, demonstrating delivery on the ground which will enhance quality of life.

"The announcement shows the government is keeping its promise in the 10 year plan of sustained investment to deliver a reliable and efficient transport system."
