ANXIOUS parents in Blackburn have taken their children's road safety into their own hands and formed a walking bus of their own.

Glenfield Playsafe Residents' Group have actively encouraged the promotion of road safety over fears that Phillips Road is too busy for unaccompanied children.

On the Glenfield Close estate 59 out of 68 homes owned by Space, have families with children.

Ian Ward, the tenants' representative said: " Our estate is across the busy Phillips Road and the only way the children can get to school is across the busy main road.

"There are currently no traffic calming measures and parents often have to stand and wait for several minutes for a gap to cross."

Gill Holt, tenant participation officer for Space, said: "We built the estate specifically as a family area and we fully support any plans to make it safer. We have already given reflective bands to all the children."

The group are also planning to provide a voluntary lollipop-person.
