TRAVELLERS who moved into a town centre car park for Christmas are to be given until the New Year to move on.

A convoy of around 12 mobile homes pulled up on to the car park off Byrom Street, Blackburn, on December 23.

The site soon looked festive when the travellers hung up Christmas lights.

But bosses at Blackburn with Darwen Council have warned they should not to make themselves too comfortable and that legal action will be taken if they are not gone by January 2.

Stuart Edworthy, speaking on behalf of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "We have been in contact with the travellers and the police are also keeping a watching brief on the situation.

"The council is in the process of drawing up papers and will be going to court next Friday if no progress has been made in moving the travellers on."

The car park the travellers have based themselves on is one of Blackburn's newest.

It was only created when the Orbital route project resulted in the area around Freckleton Street and Byrom Street being altered so it was easier for traffic by-passing the town centre to navigate.

It is a long-stay car park, meant for people planning to spend the day in the town centre.
