A FAMILY-of-seven had to spend Christmas away from home after a bedroom blaze.

The fire at the council house in Leigh started in the rear bedroom on Christmas Eve.

The seven people, including a nine-year-old and a 54-year-old man in a wheelchair, managed to escape before firefighters arrived.

The fire crew asked the Red Cross charity to help out as the family lost many of their clothes in the blaze at the semi-detached house in Crown Grove.

However, they managed to save their Christmas presents and have now been re-housed in Wigan. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
