A LEIGH school has won a second Princess Diana award in recognition of its outstanding work in pupil development.

Three years after being honoured with one of the first Princess of Wales Memorial Awards for work in peer mentoring, Bedford High, has been awarded a Silver Certificate.

This is given to schools which have nominated distinguished pupils for a Diana Award.

Head of year 11, Lesley Parry, said: "We are delighted to receive this tribute for our work in nurturing pupils and supporting them beyond getting GCSE grades. We also encourage our children to support each other."

She revealed that the school was proud of its charity fund raising activities which each year raises between £500 and £1,000 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

Each year pupils raid mums' cupboards and fifty hampers are made up to present to the elderly in the area and any left over goodies are sent to the Leigh women's refuge.

This year Hannah Jackson, 15, went beyond the call of duty providing a hamper which was so impressive it was decided to raffle it off at the schools' pensioners' party.

Other outstanding pupils include Isobel Povah who has raised thousands of pounds for local charities and last year received a school special award and Chris Myers who spends most of his spare time at evenings and weekends helping out at Leigh Cats' and Dogs' Home.

Mrs Parry said: "All the children deserve the award."
