MP Andy Burnham took to the streets on 'Mad Friday' gaining first-hand experience of night life in Leigh.

On one of the busiest nights of the year when traditionally workers meet up with for an end-of-year drink he took on an observers' role to see for himself what situations Police have to deal with when locals go out on the town.

And admitted it was an "eye-opener" as he witnessed hectic police work on the streets of Leigh.

Between 8pm and 2am he patrolled the streets of Leigh with beat officer PC Steve Marsden to see how Police deal with sometimes tense situations.

After his tour of duty Mr Burnham said: "I have always taken a close interest in crime and policing and I know it is also at the top of the agenda for much of my constituency, so I wanted to get an insight into what goes on in the area."

During their patrols of town centre hot-spots and also around the Plank Lane and Firs Park area the pair encountered a mixed range of incidents, but nothing too serious.

Impressed with the Police showing Mr Burnham said: "I was told Friday was one of the busiest nights of the year, with many workplaces finishing for Christmas the town centre was very busy. Patrolling the streets also brought home the problems with youths on the streets -- they account for nearly 80 per cent of police work. I am aware we should be providing alternative facilities for them, but this has brought it to my attention.

"I am in favour of increasing police powers to confiscate alcohol from minors and will be on a parliament committee to introduce such a bill in the new year.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to see street policing for myself and I was very impressed with the way in which the officers handled difficult situations with such sensitivity."
