GAS operator Transco is urging homeowners and businesses bosses in Bury to put safety at the top of their agenda when they return from their festive breaks.
The firm is spreading the gas safety message to people when they enter their homes, offices or factories, which have been left unoccupied.
A Transco spokesman said: "With many premises likely to be empty over the festive period, we are advising everyone to be particularly wary when they return to their homes or open up business premises.
"If people think they can smell gas inside or in the road outside their buildings or homes, they should call us."
Anyone suspecting a leak inside a building should:
Put out cigarettes. Do not use naked flames.
Not turn electric switches on or off.
Turn off the gas at the meter
Open doors and windows to get rid of the gas.
Transco's emergency call centres are open 24-hours a day. The number is 0800 111 999.
