FIREFIGHTERS saved a man's life after pulling him unconscious from a smoke-logged house in Accrington.

Paul Day, of Beech Street, was found slumped on the floor of his front room by two firefighters from Accrington station.

They dragged him out onto the pavement where he was revived with oxygen and his hands were treated for burns.

Mr Day was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmar and treated for smoke inhalation and burns. He was detained for observation.

Fire crews said the fire started on a clothes airer that had been left too close to a heater in the kitchen. They said Mr Day was asleep in the front room when the smoke woke him.

They said he had tried to remove the airer but collapsed shortly after raising the alarm.

Firefighter Gary Holderness had pulled Mr Day out of the mid-terrace house with his colleague firefighter Caroline Hardiman.

He said: "He was very lucky, the house was quite smoke-logged."
