A PROMINENT councillor has quit the city council with a stinging attack on her 'small-minded' political opponents.

Carol Broad, who has now moved to Chester, was the former chairman of housing who became embroiled in a babysitting allowances row in 2001.

A former Labour councillor who switched to the independents, she represented the people of Morecambe's Victoria ward and was never far from the headlines.

In a statement this week, Mrs Broad says: "I have decided that the time is right for me to say farewell to local Government.

I would like to say thank you to all those people who have made it possible for me to undertake my role as councillor."

But she adds: "I must say something about those small-minded 'political' opponents of various guises who, throughout the past few years, have spent more time attacking me thanstanding up for the interests of the district.

"These people have been intent on destroying myself and my family without any regard for truth or justice, forgetting the interests of the district for their own self gain.

"My family and I are settled and happy in our new home and wish to leave politics and public life to others."
