B. W. WARBURTON objects to paying a nominal amount for car parking and security at Fairfield Hospital (Your Letters, Dec 13) but I am afraid there is no such thing as a free lunch!

Also in Your Letters recently, H. M. Chidgey correctly stated that motorists pay thousands of pounds for their cars and spend large amounts on petrol, insurance, car radios with elaborate speakers and other expensive extras. Yet at the same time, they expect the local authority, who are funded by the council tax-payer, to provide free car parking and security.

It never seems to occur to motorists that the large amounts which they spend on their cars are of no benefit to the local economy; it all goes into the pockets of shareholders of foreign motor manufacturers and oil companies.

If B. W. Warburton parked his/her car in one of the private car parks in central Manchester, I don't think they would let him/her park for nothing. So why should the council and income tax-payers pick up the tab for car parking and security at Fairfield Hospital?
