A 48-year-old man was fighting for life today after he was airlifted to hospital following a head-on collision in Whalley Road, Read.

Stephen Morris, 48, of Printers Fold, Burnley, was being treated in intensive care at Royal Preston Hospital where his condition was described as critical.

Police said Mr Morris was driving a Ford Escort which skidded while turning a corner and collided with a Honda Civic close to Read Hall at noon yesterday. Mr Morris was travelling towards Padiham. The Honda was heading in the opposite direction.Firefighters cut the roof off the car to free Mr Morris before the air ambulance took him to hospital.

A driver and three passengers in the Honda, who have not been named by police, received minor injuries.
