DEAN WEST'S third Burnley goal came from the unlikely source of his left boot, and he admitted: "Now I want to score with a header."

The right back was hoping he might achieve that feat at Brighton this afternoon, and he explained: "I have scored a few headers in my time and it would be nice to get one for Burnley."

West, the player of the season last year, broke his duck for Burnley in the Worthington Cup clash with Blackpool and swiftly followed up with a penalty against Millwall for his first league goal.

But even he was a little surprised to find the net with his left peg, albeit with the help of a deflection.

"I don't often kick the ball with my left leg, never mind score with it," he said.

It was another eventful afternoon for West following his red card for deliberate handball at Gillingham. He had a tough battle on his hands with the tricky Irish international winger Mark Kennedy, got booked again and admitted he did fear another red card.

"I have played against him a few times and he is a very good player," said West. "He is skilful and he is quick and when you try to nick the ball from him he can get his toe in there.

"But I got booked for nothing in the first half because when he went down I had never touched him. Then in the second half I did catch him out on the wing and I was worried I might be off.

"The ref had actually been quite lenient for the first 25 minutes but by then he was dishing the cards out. I was quite relieved when he was sensible about the decision because those things are part of the game. I went for a tackle and didn't quite make it."

West, like his fellow scorer against Wolves Gareth Taylor, is still hoping his red card will be overturned on appeal as he tries to continue his impressive run of games for the Clarets.

He has not missed a league game since the trip to Stockport County last season and his only absence from the first team this campaign was in the Worthington Cup clash with Huddersfield.
