THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has taken to steps to close down companies associated with an internet holiday club which has Bury as one if its four bases.

Petitions to wind up 14 companies connected with the promotion and operation of The Travel Association have been presented to the High Court by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.

The business, which has traded as Holiday Direct and more recently Vacations Direct, operates from an office at GB House in Back Silver Street, Bury, as well as others in Cheshire, Cambridge and the Republic of Ireland.

The action follows investigations carried out by the DTI under the Companies Act which enables investigators to require a company to produce its records.

Acting in the public interest, the Secretary of State has decided to use the information to petition the court to wind up the companies.

On the application of the Secretary of State, the court has appointed the Official Receiver as provisional liquidator of all of the companies with the exception of one.

The petitions are listed for hearing on February 12.
