BURNLEY have been handed a New Year boost with the news that skipper Steve Davis may be back within six weeks.

It had been feared that the skipper, who limped out of the 6-2 home defeat by Rotherham United, would be missing for three months but physio Ian Liversedge explained today: "Steve is doing really well and he could be back by the middle of February."

The 34-year-old has been keeping fit in a hydro-pool as well as in the gym and it is anticipated that his knee brace will be removed in a fortnight.

There will then follow some intensive training that may even see him fit for the fray when Preston North End visit Turf Moor for a Lancashire derby.

In addition a familiar face returned to Burnley yesterday with Nik Michopoulos back from his three month loan spell at Crystal Palace.

He could be on the bench for tomorrow's trip to Sheffield United having sat on the bench for Palace at Bramall lane in the Worthington Cup quarter final a fortnight ago.
