A NEW adult shop in Burnley town centre has caused a row between its owners and the town centre management team.

John Carling, who runs Forus2 in Bridge Street said his new venture is just harmless fun that does not offended anyone.

But staff at the Burnley Town Centre Partnership said they are concerned over what is being sold.

A representative of the team paid a visit to the shop when it opened in the week before Christmas.

A spokesman for Burnley's town centre management team said: "We are aware that this outlet has opened and have spoken with the owner to establish what kind of operation he is trading as within the town centre.

"His response to us was that he is trading as a retail outlet similar to an Anne Summers shop selling underwear, clubwear and gifts.

"We are monitoring the situation to see if any products which may require a licence are being sold there."

Area manager John Carling said: "One of the team turned round and asked me what kind of shop it is. I said if anybody is not happy with anything on display I would consider removing them or coming to a compromise.

"I took some items off display during the visit. The Town Centre Partnership are not qualified to comment on or dictate on what needs a licence.

"The council are responsible for that, not an unofficial spokesperson. They are just hired by the local businesses and have no authority to tell people what they should and should not be selling.

"If it had been a representative from the council's licensing department or trading standards that would be different.

"We have done a roaring trade since we opened and were really busy over the Christmas period. I can maybe understand older people not wanting people to come in, but there is a big demand for what I sell now."
