PENDLE MP Gordon Prentice today said he is against a war with Iraq unless there is compelling evidence of weapons of mass destruction being harboured by Saddam Hussein.

Speaking from Westminster he said: "The UK and the US should turn their intelligence about the location of these Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) over to Hans Blix and UN weapon inspectors. If they find something they are duty bound to report the discovery to the UN security council which will decide what to do.

"The issue is simple. If the inspectors find something nasty that is a material breach of the UN resolution 1441, that information will be made public and if the evidence is compelling the security council should act.

"There must be a second resolution of the security council if necessary tabled by the UK. The first does not, in my view, authorise military action. The PM does not speak in my name if he departs from the UN route."

The MP is a member of the Parliamentary Committee elected by Labour MPs annually to put their concerns to the Prime Minister on the issues of the day.
