CONCILIATORY voices within the ranks of the New Labour party are being stifled by intimidatory reminders of expulsion or deselection as at least 17 warships boarded by 3,000 Royal Marines prepare to sail from the UK to the Gulf, with a further support group of around 1,500 reservists.

The aircraft carrier Ark Royal will spearhead the attack on thousands of women and children in the first waves as a means to generate fear in the Iraqi population while the US forces bombard Saddam Hussein's military defences.

How long do Bush and Blair expect close allies of Iraq to stay out of the conflict? How long before North Korea and China are forced into the affray - if only to supply weapons to the Iraqi forces as did Britain in recent conflicts.

We might question, also, how long the Tory/New Labour alliance will be in place once 'the quiet man' loses control of his dwindling Opposition.

The TUC is supporting a demonstration against war on Iraq in Liverpool on Saturday, beginning at noon in Myrtle Parade, near Liverpool University. Anyone who is against the war is welcome.

The mass demonstration will coincide with hundreds of thousands of people demonstrating in Washington, San Francisco, Canada, Japan, Italy, Spain and France to name but a few, and there are further collective demos planned in London on February 15 when, it is hoped, millions will march against the Bush/Blair aggression.
