WHILE Det Sgt Bill Nelson must do his duty and uphold traffic regulation prohibiting vehicles from using the direct route via Norwood Avenue, Lowton, he should be aware that the results of his actions will be somewhat different to the rosy picture he paints.

Enforcing the regulation will indeed add five minutes or more to the journey times of those commuters who currently ignore the regulations.

However, by adding these additional vehicles to those already queuing to pass through the traffic light restricted East Lancashire Road junction, enforcement of the regulation will penalise every person using Newton Road and Church Lane.

By increasing congestion it will lengthen journey times, worsen pollution, and, not least, it will increase the frustration of every road user, which will ultimately lead to accidents.

Enforcing the traffic prohibiting regulation may improve the lives of the few children who both reside, AND attend the school, within the prohibited area. It will do nothing for the health and safety of the majority of Lowton pupils who attend the five schools situated along Newton Road-Church Lane corridor. Neither will it benefit those students who queue for buses to take them to schools and colleges outside the immediate area.
