RACIAL equality campaigners in Blackburn have condemned the killing of a police officer in Manchester who was arresting terrorist suspects.

The director Jamal Patel and chairman Abdul Hamid Chowdry of Blackburn with Darwen Racial Equality Council said people of all faiths needed to come together to combat terrorism in all its forms.

Mr Chowdry, who was a member on Greater Manchester Police Authority for many years, said: "Terrorism knows no boundaries, religion or country. People of all faiths and heritage will see this as an extreme case of evil facing us all and we must remain calm. We must do all we can to support those who protect us from such terrible acts."

Mr Patel said: "This is an horrific act and must be seen as an ultimate price paid by a fine and brave officer to combat the evil of terrorism.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family, friends and fellow officers in GMP and Lancashire."
