THE campaign to get a sign for the new service station off the M65 changed from Blackburn to Darwen could be on its way to Parliament if the Highways Agency declines to act.

In a defiant second letter to the agency, Darwen MP Janet Anderson said the logic of naming the station after Blackburn 'escaped' her.

She addressed Tim Matthews, agency chief executive, and said: "I do not understand the point that 'it is important when introducing a new facility of this type that road users can readily identify its location to help realise the benefits it brings in terms of safety and level of service.'

"Why should naming the services 'Blackburn' fulfil these criteria more adequately than if they had been named Darwen Services?" she asked.

"Moreover, one sign simply refers to the services as McDonald's. How does this help to identify its location?"

The MP said she agreed with Coun Dave Smith's remarks on other services that weren't named after primary destinations such as Charnock Richard and Chorley.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "We don't know what would happen if it was taken to London but we still stand by the fact that the naming of the services was made in conjunction with our signing strategy."

The agency has so far received 20 letters of complaint.
