PERSISTENT shoplifter Lilly May Smith was jailed for 28 days by Blackburn magistrates after pleading guilty to two offences.

Smith, 34, of the Islington Motel, Bolton Road, Blackburn, admitted stealing brandy from Morrisons when she was on bail for stealing clothes from Tesco.

And the court heard both offences were committed within months of Smith being made subject to a community rehabilitation order for shoplifting. Michael Blacklidge, defending, said Smith had not committed any offence until she was 27 years old.

She had come from a stable family background, had married and had children, but things had started to go wrong when the relationship came to an end

"She found herself on a downward spiral which ultimately lead to heroin addiction and the problems she now faces," said Mr Blacklidge.

He said the most recent offences were committed when Smith's methadone prescription failed to arrive.
