THERE has been a lot of publicity about PFI funding for Bury's high schools, with its associated £100,000 consultancy costs. This will build a new secondary school in Radcliffe, thus reducing the surplus place problem there at a stroke.

The initiative, recently slated in the Times Educational Supplement as a cause of badly-designed schools which probably have a lifespan of no more than 20 years, yet nonetheless viewed positively by Bury Council's executive, will also ensure rebuilding work at the over-subscribed Tottington High and the Derby High.

Elton High School appears to have been overlooked in all this redevelopment. Are we to be told why?
