A NEW year sees a new head teacher at Bury Grammar School (Girls). Mrs Roberta "Bobby" Georghiou is the eighth head teacher in the Bridge Road school's 119-year history, and the first one to have been married.

A graduate of Manchester University in English Language and Literature, she has based her teaching career in the North West. After three years at Rivington and Blackrod High School, she moved to Bolton School Girls' Division where she became head of English.

In 1996 she was appointed deputy head teacher at Westholme School, Blackburn, from where she has come to Bury.

Mrs Georghiou (46), whose interests include theatre and reading, said: "I am delighted to have been appointed to Bury Grammar School (Girls), which is nationally recognised as a leading independent school.

"My priorities are to maintain the high standards of education for which the school has already gained its excellent reputation and to ensure that the girls have every opportunity to discover their strengths and fulfil their potential.

"As far as I am concerned, this school will go from strength to strength."
