Mr Francis Lamb was being cared for at the high security Rivington Unit when he died on Monday (Jan 13).
The 41-year-old was discovered in the grounds of the Bury New Road hospital shortly after 11am.
A police spokesman said they were called to reports of a man "in a collapsed condition" outside Prestwich Hospital.
The spokesman said: "The 41-year-old man was taken to North Manchester General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival."
An initial post-mortem was inconclusive and inquiries are continuing into how he died.
