IT's four months now since Bury Boxing Club upped sticks and moved from their old gym in Willow Street to new surroundings at the Seedfield Centre off Walmersley Road in Bury.

And coach Mike Jelley, as keen as ever, reports that things are going well for the club, its members and the training staff.

The club have the use of two rooms at the centre. The main room houses the ring, punchbags and balls and other exercise equipment used by the lads on training nights.

A few yards away down the corridor is another open plan room which is also used as an exercise area.

"It's ideal really here at Seedfield now we have settled in and people know where we are," said Mike.

Training nights are Monday and Thursday with a beginners class on Thursday evening from 6.30pm till 7.45pm.

As many as 35 boxers have been known to turn up for the sessions, but on average Mike reckons the club attracts around 24 men and boys most nights.

Mike's jewel in the crown is 16-year-old Amir Khan, who recently won the National Schoolboys title for the third time since joining the club as an 11-year-old back in April 1998.

Now international honours beckon for Amir, who is off to Crystal Palace this weekend to join a training camp which could lead to a trip to India in February as a member of the Young England boxing team.

"He's in with a chance," said Mike. "In fact, there could be all sorts of things opening up for Amir, such as world championships, if he stays on course and does as well as he has been doing."

Mike is regularly journeying up and down the country, taking his boxers to various events. "It depends where we get invited, but Rhyl, Liverpool and Barnsley are regular venues and a week on Saturday we will be at Bamber Bridge where another schooboy championship gets under way," Mike added.

As the referee says, "Box on, Mike. Box on!"
