ROGUE off licences and teenage drinkers are being targeted as part of a police crackdown.

Police in Padiham are promising to take tough action against shops and off licences caught selling alcohol to underage drinkers, as part of a new campaign to prevent teenage boozing.

The crackdown has been launched in response to complaints from the public about juvenile nuisance and disorder -- which police believe is fuelled by drink.

Five premises are already facing action after being caught out by police conducting test purchases with Trading Standards this week.

Officers are now warning all shops in the area that anyone found breaking the law will face hefty fines, as well as the prospect of losing their licence to sell alcohol.

Sergeant Dave Fleming, of Burnley police, said: "Alcohol is often a key factor in incidents of juvenile nuisance which is why we want to reduce its availability to youths.

"We are very disappointed with the results of our initial test purchasing exercise and would like to warn other shops and off licences of their responsibilities.

"Any premises found to be contravening the law will face hefty fines and, no doubt, some difficult questions when they come to renew their licences."

Sgt Fleming added: "We are determined to crackdown on the teen drinkers and the misery they cause to local residents.

"I would urge anyone with any information about off licences who are breaking the law to contact us."
