MEMBERS of Blackburn's Salvation Army have lined up a full programme of events to mark the organisation's 125th anniversary.

The schedule will mark the run-up to the corps anniversary weekend on July 5 and 6.

The Salvation Army started in 1878 after the Christian Mission was renamed. By 1887 the organisation moved to its first permanent hall in Merchant Street and then to the current headquarters at the Citadel, Vicar Street, Blackburn, in 1925.

Events started with a celebration for youngsters a week ago on Saturday January 25, including a party in the afternoon followed by a special Christian evening of fun and worship.

On March 1 and 2, the Bellshill band play at the Citadel, and on March 22 the musical Godspell will be presented.

There are still roles left for singers and musicians to take part in the performance.

Activities also include regular meetings for the Army band, choir and young, gatherings for women and over-55s. The Sunday School, Christian, Bible study and prayer meetings are every Sunday at 10am and 4pm.

The organisation will also be holding a coffee morning at Mill Hill Community Centre on the last Friday of every month and a Songs of Praise service at the Citadel on the last Sunday.

These will also be accompanied by regular community services, help and advice and counselling sessions.
