A FOUR-vehicle pile-up on the Edenfield bypass caused traffic chaos yesterday when the south-bound carriageway was closed for three hours.

Bad weather conditions led to a collision involving three heavy goods vehicles and one van at 11.15am.

No-one was seriously injured but the accident caused a tailback of cars until the police could arrange for the vehicles to be removed.

PC Chris Edwards, of the road policing unit in Colne, said: "It all started with a broken down heavy goods vehicle on the Manchester bound side of the bypass. Another HGV ran into the back of it and collided with a third HGV and a van."

John Hill, 54, of Spencer Street, Accrington, was the driver of the second HGV.

PC Edwards said: "Only one was a local driver from Accrington but he was not injured. The driver of the broken down HGV from Northumberland suffered minor head injuries and the driver of the third HGV suffered minor bruising to his legs and chest.

"The incident was due to bad weather conditions and the volume of traffic on the bypass."
