A FATHER has joined the police in an appeal for witnesses to the 'unprovoked and vicious' attack on his teenage son.

Police said the boy, 15, was set-upon by six Asian youths in maroon blazers in Preston New Road, Blackburn, last Friday at 3.40pm.

The father, who does not want himself or his son to be named, said he believed they were from Beardwood High School, in the same road.

Inspector Stuart Bruce said the victim tried to run away from them down Addison Street, but they chased him and started to punch him again.

They were scared off after a passing motorist sounded his horn, whereupon the victim carried on to the doctors and received medical attention.

They are described as being about 16, one of them being particularly tall and wearing glasses.

The boy's father said: "This was a completely unprovoked attack. They came up to him and asked if he was all right and then started punching him. They didn't shout any racist comments, but I believe this is a racist attack. But we do not want this to escalate.

"He was in a right mess, beaten black and blue.

"It was a really busy time of the day and people should have seen something, especially the driver who sounded his horn."

Insp Bruce said: "This is a particularly nasty attack and we would like people to come forward to help us. The victim said the boys were wearing maroon blazers and the only school in that area is Beardwood. We will be following that line of inquiry.

"We are currently looking for witnesses and if anyone has information, please ring the police on 01254 52111."

Ruby Hussain, headmistress of Beardwood School, said: "If anybody comes forward and it comes out that they are my children, I will do my utmost.

"We do work very closely with the police."
