STRIKING firefighters came to the rescue when a Tyldesley toddler got his finger stuck fast in a plughole.

Picketing firemen at Leigh fire station were quick to respond when 14 month-old Toby Firth rolled-up with a plug hole and waste pipe still attached to his hand.

Toby had got his finger stuck in a shower drain in the bathroom at his Astley Street home.

Firemen worked for 15 minutes cutting away the metal plug hole while Toby sat on dad Gary's knee while his three year years-old brother, Oliver, was shown round a fire engine.

Dad Gary, aged 29, said: "Toby is in to everything. I turned my back for a minute and he was in the bathroom."

Toby's mum, Becky Talbot, aged 22, tried to free him after the Saturday morning mishap before Gary had to remove the plughole drain. They took him to Leigh Infirmary walk-in centre where staff directed them to the picket line.
