A DECISION on proposals to build more than 600 houses on the site of the former Whittingham Hospital site near Preston has been put on hold for talks to continue.

The NHS have applied for planning permission for the development, which includes provisions for a school and will find building of the Broughton bypass.

There has been widespread opposition to the plans from local residents.

Permission has already been granted for the scheme by the Secretary of State but Preston City Council was set to make a final decision on details including how the new homes will look at a meeting on Monday.

Phil Davis, of the council's planning department, said: "There has been a period of intense negotiation. The NHS agreed to a deferral at planning committee.

"The decision will be made at a future date."
