Oulton Raiders 10 Leigh East 30: LEIGH East chalked up their first league win in three months. And it was well worth the wait.

Oulton, who scarely completed a set in the first half, were hardly the most challenging of opponents. Nevertheless, East skilfully exposed all of their hosts weaknesses and capitalised on them in what was a capable and commanding performance.

The Leigh forwards were first class, leaving the opposing six a poor second. John Taylor, with his amazing defensive skills, again stood out in the front row; Robert Bowdler continues to work his way back to his best while the power and commitment of Michael Whiteside and Lee Wingfield saw Oulton back-peddalling throughout.

It was two good drives from Whiteside, followed by a well timed kick through from Taylor, which set the stage for a try from Bowdler with only two minutes gone. Less than five minutes later East went further ahead after Woods broke clear and Lee Rowley crossed the whitewash.

On 15 minutes superb work from classy full-back Gary Molyneaux brought Bowdler's second try. Wingfield and Woods combined to put Gunning over and with Woods adding three goals, East were 22-0 up in as many minutes.

Oulton managed to pull four points back with an unconverted try but with East's forwards dominating and half backs Kilshaw and man of the match Gunning dictating the attacking play, the home side made little impact. The best try of the game came from Ian Lewis after the ball had gone through seven pairs of hands and at half time East led 26-4.

It was a different story in the second half as East relaxed and Oulton finally tried to salvage something. They scored an early second half try and goal but could do nothing more to break down the visitots who had the last shout in the 70th minute with a try from Andrew Stephens.
