AS someone who was seemingly once never off our TV screens, Bobby Davro has a pretty low opinion of the programmes currently being served up to the viewing public.

"TV is basically ageist," says the man who in the early '90s was prime time viewing.

"People just don't get entertainment any more.

"Look at Saturday nights.

"There is nothing on for the mums and dads who stay in and the youngsters who the programmes are supposedly aimed at are going out."

For the first time in over eight years, Bobby Davro is touring the country with his own show -- Not in Front of the Children -- which comes to Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre in June.

"I think a lot of people seeing the name Bobby Davro will be expecting some sort of family show but I'm not some children's entertainer.

"People know me as a family entertainer on a Saturday night but this is a show for a grown-up audience.

"Don't get me wrong. I'm not being blue for the sake of it.

"It's just a little cheeky in parts and I'll do impressions of Ozzy Osbourne and Eminem for instance, so you'd expect the odd expletive.

"You wouldn't take your children along to see Billy Connolly or Lee Evans and it's the same with this show.

"Bobby Davro has got this awful image for being twee and old-fashioned and they don't give me the chance to get on TV any more.

"People are therefore surprised at how contemporary the show is.

"People tend to think that just because you haven't been on TV you have stopped working, but I'm always busy doing a lot of corporate work."

As well as undertaking this current 40-date national tour, Bobby will be heading off on the QE2 with Kenny Lynch and a big band show.

"That's something I'd like to tour with next year possibly," he said.

The current Not in Front of the Children Show features impressive lighting and stage sets.

"The days of travelling with a six-piece band have long gone," said Bobby. "It's just too expensive but with technology the music is just as good.

"It's a real entertainment show and we have a great comedy juggler called Richard Gauntlet, who does a spot in the first halft."

But Bobby Davro remains the star of the show, offering a full repertoire of songs, gags and impressions.

"We have a great night," he said, "and the shows have been going really well."

Bobby Davro has changed the date of his show to Sunday, June 22. Refunds are available from the box office on 01254 380293, but tickets are valid for the new date.
