A NEW force in the fight against crime took to the streets of Blackpool this week -- just in time for the busy Bank Holiday weekend.

The resort's first Street Crime Wardens are to act as the 'eyes and ears' of local police in a bid to reduce crime and public nuisance.

Clearly visible in a distinctive uniform and carrying radios linked to the CCTV control centre, hopes are high that the wardens will repeat the success of similar schemes in other areas.

Eight new wardens started work this week, carrying out street patrols and providing information for the police and council on key local problems such as dumped cars and graffiti.

"Reducing the fear of crime and providing high visibility street patrols is an important aspect of Blackpool Community Safety Partnership's strategy," said partnership manager, Sarah Kirby: "and I very much welcome the arrival of these eight new wardens."

The new wardens come from a variety of backgrounds, working in industries as varied as defence and aviation.

The wardens are expected to play an important role in this weekend's 'Operation Arrival,' which will see a highly visible presence in known trouble spots to reassure the public during what is expected to be one of the busiest weekends of the year.

The wardens will work between 10am and 10pm in the town centre area bordered by Talbot Road, New Bonny Street and Cookson Street.
