A PUBLIC meeting is to be held to discuss a controversial bid by ASDA to build offices on open land at Bispham.

The supermarket giant wants to build a two-storey office development, consisting of 13 units and car parking in landscaped surroundings, on land off Warren Drive, Bispham.

But Norbreck councillor Peter Callow -- who, together with Cllr Maxine Callow, has called the meeting on June 3 -- said: "It's imperative that people get along to the meeting.

"This is residents' last chance to protest over this huge office accommodation. We believe it could have a devastating impact on Norbreck."

The development is planned for land partly owned by ASDA and partly owned by Blackpool Borough Council. It is understood ASDA would only build on its part of the land.

But Cllr Callow said residents feared the development could lead to traffic congestion, less green space for the public, and flooding in a area known in the past for poor drainage.

"Blackpool is one of the most densely populated areas outside of London.

"This site is one of the least green, unspoiled areas within the borough.

"Once you've got a situation where green land is being replace by concrete and buildings, and you have got to have sewerage and drainage, this may pose a question regarding flooding in that area again which we thought had been overcome."

ASDA put in its original planning application for the development last September.

But the council has been waiting for further reports, including a traffic impact survey, to arrive before the application can go before the planning committee.

The public meeting -- also expected to be attended by Blackpool's planning chief, Reg Haslam -- will be held at Montgomery High School, All Hallows Road, Bispham on June 3 at 7pm.
