STREET robbers are facing tougher prison sentences.

Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) Operation Hawk officers and members of the judicial system say that offenders face long spells in prison.

This follows a number of long prison sentences passed for robbery offences, with some recent offenders being jailed for up to ten years.

Detective Superintendent Nigel Preston, GMP's Operation Hawk team, said: "These results are testament to the hard work and dedication of our officers working on Operation Hawk to help reduce street crime across our region.

"The convictions highlight our continued and proactive approach to crack down on street crime across the force area and these prison sentences send a clear message that we will not tolerate crime of any kind on our streets. We also hope that it sends reassurance to the public that we are working extremely hard to make our community safer."

Operation Hawk was launched in August 2000 to reduce street robbery.
