ROSSENDALE is being carved up like Poland was in the Second World War, says Bury's top Tory.
Councillor Roy Walker demanded that Bury hold talks with its northern neighbour over the possible merger of the two authorities.
Bury and Rochdale are looking at plans to take over Rossendale council should it be abolished if residents vote for a North West regional assembly.
But Coun Walker was not happy that the two metropolitan boroughs were apparently discussing this without consulting Rossendale, reminiscent of "the Polish question" in the war.
"We're getting a bad press in the valley," he told the last full council meeting. "This is not the way to pursue it. We should have a friendly constructive meeting, before too many terrible things are said.
"We do support it, if it is a merger, a partnership, and not a takeover or a carve-up."
The three party leaders in Bury will formulate the council's response to the Boundary Committee on the plans by September 8.
