A DOCTOR who was in charge of Bury General Hospital's diabetic clinic for 21 years has died at the age of 86.

Dr Ron Savidge, who retired in October, 1975, died last week at his home in Bedfield, Suffolk. A funeral service was held on Wednesday (July 30).

After serving in the Army during World War Two, Dr Savidge worked in medicine at Davyhulme before joining Bury General Hospital. He became a consultant physician and head of the hospital's diabetic unit from 1954 until his retirement.

He also served as a tutor and established the hospital's post-graduate institute. Dr Savidge chaired the local branch of the British Medical Association and held office regionally.

He lived in Pinfold Lane, Whitefield, and later in Helmshore. He was also a member of Bury Rotary Club and a past president who carried out much charity work. After his retirement, he moved to Suffolk. A widower, he leaves two daughters.

Former colleague Dr Satinder Lal, who set up the area's first coronary care unit with Dr Savidge, said: "He was one of the best things ever to happen to Bury. He brought so much knowledge and kudos to the town and was a great asset to Bury."
