WHEN asked what they are most proud of in East Lancashire, many say it is the friendliness of the people.

Our area has many tight-knit communities and the cornerstones of these are the close relations between neighbours.

For many, especially the vulnerable, this neighbourly network of support can make a real difference to their quality of life.

Today we launch our Neighbour of the Year award, sponsored by Asda, which recognises the community spirit that still exists in many East Lancashire streets and roads.

The accolade is designed to reward a number of attributes. Perhaps you know someone who gives up their time to shop for a neighbour every day because they are elderly or disabled.

Or maybe they have given them emotional support during a difficult period in their life.

Alternatively, you might want to nominate someone who did something heroic to save you or your property. This might include coming to the rescue during a house fire or showing great courage by chasing off a would-be burglar.

The help might be more widespread. Perhaps someone has given up their time to benefit the people living in their street or estate, for instance by setting up a Neighbourhood Watch group.

Carol Hendey, Blackburn with Darwen and Hyndburn community safety officer, said: "What is a good neighbour to someone is very different to someone else.

"There are very few places now where you can leave your door open because of social changes over the years.

"But a good neighbour is someone who cares for their neighbour and the local neighbourhood as much as they care for their own.

"People recognise there are sections of society who are more vulnerable than the rest. Not everyone wants people calling all the time, but for them it's nice to know someone is there if they ever need help."

As with all 11 Pride of East Lancashire Awards nominees can be put forward by a third party or can enter themselves.
