ARMIES of midges and threatening thunderclouds could not disturb the atmosphere when Shakespeare came to Darwen.

Illyria Theatre Company proved to be another shining example of why the Darwen Library Theatre has been cooking up a storm for the past two seasons.

The Merchant of Venice, performed against a backdrop of Bold Venture Park scenery (including the children's play area) could not have been better performed had there been a 100-strong cast and thousands of pounds worth of scenery in place.

Five actors --- Laura Fitzpatrick, Kevin Fuller, Liz Jadav, Richard Mansfield and Simon Matthews -- turned Shakespeare into something the Bard himself would approve of.

With enough humour to satisfy the youngsters in the crowd, the three hour performance boasted more costume changes than Lilly Savage's career to date and still the characters were easily distinguishable.

The small stage looked like it could collapse at any minute -- greatly adding to the drama of the night. As did evil Shylock and destined lovers Bassanio and Portia.
