MORE run-down and empty homes are set to be bulldozed in Burnley.

Dozens of houses in Cog Lane, Bartle Street, Hampden Street, Prestwich Street, Holbeck Street and Robinson Street will be knocked down at a cost of £1,275,210.

The council will buy the houses and clear the land. Housing officers said most have been vacant for a number of years and are unfit for habitation.

Councillor Carole Galbraith said: "Residents in these areas will soon benefit from the clearance of these properties, many of which have been fire damaged and have been a source of vandalism which has led to complaints from local residents and councillors.

"The owners have shown no inclination to renovate them or sell them, leaving the council with little option other than to demolish them."

The council say the demolition is part of a wider programme to improve the housing stock and the local environment.
