A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Leigh has admitted causing the death of his friend in a car accident in Bolton.

Richard Bourke of Staves Avenue, Pennington, was driving a Renault Clio along Bradshaw Road towards Tottington at speed when the accident happened.

Bolton Crown Court heard he lost control of the vehicle before colliding with a Citroen van travelling in the opposite direction. The accident happened at about 7.45am on Thursday, April 17, this year.

The collision crushed the Clio's front seat passenger, 20-year-old Greg Williams, of Watling Street, Bury, between the oncoming van and Bourke, who was not wearing a seatbelt.

Mr Williams was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital for treatment, but died a short time later from head injuries.

A 38-year-old man from Haslingden, who was driving the van, sustained serious injuries to his head and body.

He was airlifted by the Greater Manchester Police Force's helicopter to Preston Royal Hospital where he remained for several weeks. Although now discharged, he is likely never to recover fully from his head injuries.

Bourke escaped with only a minor head injury.

When he appeared at Bolton Crown Court yesterday, he also admitted obtaining services by deception

Sentencing was adjourned until August 22.
