A TEN-YEAR-OLD girl fed up with rubbish dropped in her street has organised a litter pick and encouraged her neighbours to join in.

More than 40 residents in the Piccadilly area of Burnley, around Jessie's Park, gave up three hours to help Rebecca Alston in her battle to clean up the streets.

The Rosewood Primary School pupil, who lives in Piccadilly Road, also managed to win the support of Burnley Council, which provided skips for the rubbish on the day, and Burnley and Padiham Community Housing, which has cut back hedges in Piccadilly Gardens.

Local area worker, Ben Hughes, said: "What Rebecca has done is brilliant. She decided the area, and particularly the park, needed tidying up and rather than wait for the council to come and do it, she decided to tackle it herself.

"At the moment Piccadilly is not included in the south west Burnley action plan but people like Rebecca and the local residents' group, Piccadilly's Moving, are taking the initiative and all the work they are doing is really positive in developing the area."
