BARNOLDSWICK is going to be buzzing for the next two months in the lead-up to the town's first festival.

More than eight weeks of events are lined up by Barnoldswick's Community Arts Group and a host of local organisations -- all of which will be based on the letter 'B'.

The Barnoldswick Festival has grown out of the previous Barlick Bugs events held over the last three years.

The fun begins with Bells and Bikes on August 9 and 10, followed by Bugs and Brushes, a Brazilian kite festival, Ballet and Bopping, Balloons and Barges, Barbershop and Brass, Bands and Bugs.

A town crier competition will kick off the events on Saturday, August 9, marking the end of Kevin Griffith's reign as Barnoldswick's Town crier.

The day will see a score of criers bellowing to win the Barnoldswick Bellman trophy at 10.30am and 2.30pm, following a procession to the town square at 10am.

Entertainment will continue on the square with local line dance instructor Deana Randle leading her EEE ZEE club and Barnoldswick Folk Group Now Then will be playing a set of songs specially written about the Barnoldswick area.

On Sunday, August 10, the focus will switch to Victory Park, where the town's Chamber of Trade will host a gala and country fair, including a stunt bike display.

Highlights of the programme in later weeks include hot air balloons over Barlick and a series of other events up until the weekend of September 20 and 21. Arts group chairman Allan Buck, said: "This festival is going to be the bee's knees. The town will be really buzzing.

"As well as providing an opportunity for community celebration and development, the festival aims to put Barnoldswick and its businesses on the map.

"I hope all the town will take part at some point as there really is something for everyone."

Flyers detailing the dates of the events are now available at local outlets and opportunities for people to take part in the activities will be advertised over coming weeks.

Children have been taking part in workshops, as part of Pendle Leisure Trust's Active Futures programme during the summer holidays to create flags, lanterns, kites and bug sculptures.
