NORWICH have called off the hunt for Burnley striker Gareth Taylor - for now!

Burnley have been bracing themselves for an improved offer from the Canaries after throwing out the recent £300,000 bid.

But City boss Nigel Worthington is happy to play the waiting game until the Clarets striker recovers from the eye injury that has ruled him out of the start of the league season.

Worthington is still smarting from losing out to West Ham in the hunt for his other striking target, David Connolly, who completed a £275,000 move from Wimbledon earlier this week.

He said: "Trying to make the right signing for the club has been frustrating. When you go after good players and for one reason or another they go elsewhere, it can be frustrating, but you have got to live with that and get on with things.

"At this moment in time we've got to go with what we've got. I've said all along that I've wanted to add players to the squad, especially after players have left.

"We had a chance of getting Connolly and he would have been a great signing for this club and now Taylor's injury has closed that one down 100 per cent."

Sources in Norwich suggest Worthington may well renew his interest when Taylor is back on his feet again.

Meanwhile, Burnley FC season ticket sales have nudged through the 8,000 barrier.

The Clarets have been steeling themselves for a drop in numbers following the disappointing end to the last campaign.

And with one week to go until the First Division campaign kicks-off, the current total stands at 8,170.

That represents a drop of over 3,500 on last season's numbers, when optimism was sky high after missing out on the play-offs by the narrowest of margins.

Turf Moor ticket office manager Graham Raven said: "There is still a steady stream of supporters renewing their tickets, but admittedly the numbers will be well down on last year.

"We expected something like this because of the fall-off in attendances towards the end of of last season.

"But overall, we seem to be heading for the number we hoped for. The fact many supporters paid on the day for last weekend's friendly clash with Leeds offers more hope that the Clarets coffers can still be boosted by healthy attendances this term, despite many of the so-called big clubs, such as Sunderland and West Ham, not due to arrive at Turf Moor until next year.

Burnley fans have the chance to mingle with players past and present at an official reception to launch a new book, 'It's Burnley, Not Barcelona' which is now on sale priced £12.95.

Author and Clarets fan Dave Thomas will also be at the launch, which takes place in the banqueting suite of the James Hargreaves Stand at Turf Moor on Monday, between 1-4pm.

Discounted copies of the book will be available and refreshments will be served.
