PET-OWNERS, whose animals have gone missing are to get help, thanks to Rossendale Council and the Yorkshire Building Society.
The building society has bought the council a £400 scanner, which detects a microchip implanted under the animals skin. It will be carried by refuse collectors who have the unpleasant task of collecting the bodies of cats and dogs killed in road accidents.
Bill Potter, Rossendale Council's environmental health manager for housing, said: "Council staff collect the animals and take them to a mortuary and then await inquiries.
"Quite often we hear nothing, yet we know there will be a distressed family wondering what has happened to their pet.
The building society agreed to help after being approached by the RSPCA.
