CHURCH of England housing and support workers are asking East Lancashire communities to open their homes to help vulnerable young homeless people at risk in the community.

Cath Norris, co-ordinator of the Young Person's Accommodation and Support Services (YPASS) programme run by the Blackburn Diocese, said: "There's a desperate need. We've got a waiting list of young people currently homeless and in need of support."

The YPASS scheme, started earlier this year, matches young people, with individuals and families able to provide accommodation. Hosts receive expenses, training and support.

The young people, usually aged 16 or 17, have a home for an agreed period of anything between a few nights and two years.

Project support worker Vicky Ogretmen, said: "We're hoping to build up a bank of people in the Blackburn with Darwen area, so we can work together in order to meet the needs of these young people."

Cath Norris added: "We are not necessarily seeking families, as there could be people on their own who have a spare room in their home who could welcome and support a young person.

"It's a genuine willingness to offer support that we are looking for. It would be lovely to have a lot of people available and that is what we are aiming for. It does work and people get so much out of it."
