AS Ian Bell, project manager of the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, likes to justify his job through this page, could he also answer questions like:

1. What is the breakdown of the £1 million which he says each death on the roads costs taxpayers?

2. Of the speed cameras in the Blackburn area, how many people have been killed/seriously injured within half a mile of each one before a camera was thought to be needed?

To me, Mr Bell's remarks (Letters, August 1) look full of government and police spin for raising money in hidden taxes.

As in all jobs, if you can get maximum results out of least effort you will go for the soft targets which come to you -- as in use of speed cameras.
