STAN Ternent has warned Burnley winger Alan Moore he faces the axe unless he steps up his game.

Clarets chief Ternent singled out Moore for stinging criticism in the wake of Saturday's 4-1 defeat at West Brom, which left his side rooted to the foot of the First Division.

The Republic of Ireland wide man was substituted just after the hour mark as Ternent's troops buckled under the weight of a storming second half display by the Baggies.

And Moore, who has started all three competitive games this season, could now find his place under threat.

Ternent said: "I thought a lot of the players played well with the exception of Alan Moore, who I thought was poor.

"I don't normally single players out, but I expect more from my players than he gave me today and if I don't get more from him, then he won't play. I'll play the kids. He is much better than that."

Debutant defender David May earned praise from Ternent, despite the harsh scoreline at the Hawthorns.

The former Manchester United stopper warned fans he would tire towards the end of the game after a recent lack of action, but still showed more than enough to suggest that he will bolster Burnley's back line.

And Ternent, who described May's display as "smashing", feels the Clarets all-round performance in the live TV game belied the flattering scoreline.

"I thought we played reasonably well and it was only the last two goals that put a different turn on the game," he added.

"I certainly didn't think it was a 4-1, even though that's how it finished. We had a blatant penalty appeal for Glen (Little) at 2-1 and overall I felt we played some decent stuff.

"Their first goal is goal of the season stuff and you can't do anything about those, but the other three were avoidable.

"I thought the defence coped really well and the two goals in the last two minutes only came because we were chasing the game trying to get a goal back."

Overall we gave as good as we got without getting any rewards for it."

Burnley must now try to register their first points of the season at home to Wigan next weekend if a possible repeat of last season, when the Clarets lost their first four games, is to be avoided.

The Clarets reserves are in action against Preston North End at Deepdale (7pm).
